^Click to Enlarge^ Thursday June 4, 1998 - Day 5 Its just another morning and a bicycle traffic jam in Santa Maria. Actually road work is in progress and there's only one lane open. Later the "inmates" at pit stop 4 near Lompoc are doing a fine job! |

This morning we start
out after only 3 miles with "Agony Grade". This hill is 3 blocks straight up. At
least it sure looks like it. The best way to hit it is to get as much speed as possible,
stand up on the pedals and progressively drop to the lowest gear, then scream! That'll
wake you up. Whew! The next 20 miles through Santa Maria is fairly flat, until we begin a
climb over the coastal hills toward Lompoc. Then the two long climbs of the day,
"Climb for Life" and "Pain Pass". Both are a just over a mile, but
"Pain Pass" is slightly steeper. Its around 12:00 PM and with the clear skies
the noonday sun is beating down pretty hard. I got to the lunch stop at the entrance to
Vandenberg AFB with the water bottles on empty. Boy am I ready for lunch! After lunch its
only another 10 miles to camp. This evening its in a park in Lompoc (River Park).
