Wednesday  June 3, 1998 - Day 4

About 20 miles northeast of Pismo Beach its a pleasant ride on a lonely road in the rain.  But check out the aerial view of the entire "city" at the Oceano Airport.  My first time in a helicopter!

Day 7

Another early breakfast, pack up my stuff, and I'm on my way.  It looks like its going to be a nice day.   Overcast and hazy, but it should burn off leaving us with a bright sunny day.   So I don't need my rain gear.  10 miles into the ride the first of the "evil twin" hills is upon us.  Not as bad as yesterday's "Quad Buster" although longer.  But the cloud cover is getting darker, and soon it begins to mist.  Then the mist turns into drizzle.  Soon its outright raining and my rain gear is on a truck on its way to camp 4!  As I climb to a higher elevation its getting cold.  Fortunately another rider offers an extra parka (one of those plastic disposable kinds) and I gratefully accept it.  Finally I reach the top, more than 1000 feet higher than camp 3!  Its also the official half-way point.   Then its a welcome downhill run.  The rest of the day is fairly uneventful until the arrival at camp 4.  It happens to be Oceano Airport.  Now, I've flown into this airport and now I am about to camp on it along with 2500 other riders and 600+ crew.   An enterprising helicopter pilot is selling rides, so I decide to take him up on it.  What a view.  Check out the photo above.
