Day 7

After what has become my regular breakfast of oatmeal with raisins, a small blueberry muffin and orange  juice I hit the road at 6:00 AM.  The morning is rather pleasant with some scattered clouds.  Again, I'm taking it easy as my quads don't seem to be any better.  I'm on a road that follows a dry river bed for several miles until we cross it over an old wooden bridge.  Then we begin a gradual climb toward the coast.  Soon we're upon the first pit stop and the usual coffee laden riders in line for the porta potties.   What follows is the most challenging hill of the ride, the "Quad Buster".   This is hard.  Can't say it any better.  I am in my lowest gear, just taking it one-pedal-at-a-time.  After a while I'm thinking, "maybe if I finish this ride I'll try something other than cycling".  And while myself and others are on the verge of hoofing it, there's a crowd at the top of the hill cheering us all on.   About a hundred yards from the top I pour it on.  Amid the cheers I crest the hill and join in to cheer the others on.  Continuing on I cruise downhill almost 10 miles to the Coast Highway.  A few more miles and its pit stop 2.  The pit crew is appropriately dressed in a military theme at the Camp Roberts Military Reservation.   The rest of the day is relatively flat and pleasant until about 10 miles before camp 3.  With a 20 mph headwind I'm slowed to what seems like a crawl.  By the time I get into camp I'm exhausted.  But after a shower and dinner, I feel fine.   And tonight we have a treat.  Paula Poundstone makes an appearance with a hilarious stand-up routine that lasts for almost 2 hours!  And then the best part of the night...sleep!
