Up at 4:30 AM to pack up, eat breakfast and get ready to depart at 6:00 AM. And the quads don't feel all that great. Apparently I overexerted myself on the first day as my quadriceps are burning when I begin riding. After throttling back a bit, I find that the pain lasts only about a minute as long as I keep pedaling. But I still can't push as hard as I usually do, so I'll take it a little slower today. And today's terrain is rather flat, so it's a good day to take it easy. The overcast is keeping the temperatures in the low 90's (I'm told earlier years have been over 110!) so I can't complain. Lunch in Central Park, Salinas brings the media from the local T.V. stations. Cruising by a schoolhouse in Salinas has an entire class cheering us on. At the last pit stop an enterprising local sets up an ice cream cart across the road, and it seems like the riders are more interested in what he has to sell rather than the Gatorade at the pit stop. Finally I get to the last stretch toward King City (photo above) and a strong 20mph+ tailwind gives us a welcome burst of speed. And they really ought to fix the mileage on the route card. Today wasn't 97.8 miles as advertised but rather 103 miles...a bonafide century! I think I'll see that masseuse tonight!
